MLBPA Rejects MLB's Offer, Asks League To Set '20 Schedule

The MLBPA has asked MLB to "set a schedule for the 2020 season rather than counter the latest return-to-play proposal by the league," setting the stage for MLB to "implement a significantly shortened schedule and deepening the labor strife." MLBPA Exec Dir Tony Clark in a statement last night rejected MLB's latest proposal, saying, "Further dialogue with the league would be futile. It's time to get back to work. Tell us when and where." Sources said that if MLB does implement a season, both parties "could file grievances to be heard by an arbitrator, though neither would necessarily delay games being played" (ESPN.com, 6/13). The MLBPA in a letter to the league wrote, "We demand that you inform us of your plans by close of business on Monday, June 15" (TWITTER.com, 6/13).

MLB last night in response "issued a rejoinder that displayed as much tension and ill will as Clark’s statement." The league expressed its disappointment “the MLBPA has chosen not to negotiate in good faith over resumption of play" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/14). ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian said, “To have this bickering over money is a really, really bad look for baseball. ... What’s happening right now is going to drag into 2021” (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 6/14).
