Selig Calls For Stiffer Penalties For First-Time Drug Offenders
MLB Commissioner Bud Selig yesterday said that he "wants a tougher penalty for first-time offenders" of the league's banned substance policy. Selig: "Apparently the penalties haven't deterred some people." He added, "Obviously there are some people, small in number, who need to be given a tougher lesson" (AP, 3/3). Selig said that MLB Exec VP/Economics & League Affairs Rob Manfred has spoken with MLBPA Exec Dir Michael Weiner about the topic, and will "explore the possibility of overhauling the penalty system" (USATODAY.com, 3/2).
