World TeamTennis To Unveil Chicago Smash Expansion Franchise

World TeamTennis today will announce a Chicago expansion franchise -- the Smash -- which becomes the league’s ninth team and the third to join since WTT CEO Carlos Silva took charge in January last year. The Smash, which is currently owned by the league, will play its home matches at Credit Union 1 Arena on the campus of the Univ. of Illinois at Chicago. Silva said that the league wanted to restore its presence in Chicago, home of one of the WTT’s original eight franchises back in '74. The WTT will look for local owners once the newborn franchise is established. Silva: “Certainly, we like big cities that have NFL and NBA and NHL teams, it makes everything feel big.”

Also today, the WTT will release its '20 schedule.
