Former UEFA President Platini Detained As Part Of '22 WC Probe

Former UEFA President Michel Platini "was detained in Paris" early today as "part of an investigation into alleged corruption in the Qatar 2022 World Cup bidding process." It is the first time Platini "has been detained regarding the attribution of the 2022 World Cup." At the time of the vote in December '10, Platini was UEFA president and "publicly backed the Qatar bid." Qatar beat the U.S., Australia, South Korea and Japan for the right to host the '22 tournament, but the vote "was mired in controversy" (ESPN.com, 6/18). The N.Y. Times profiled Platini this weekend
