NBA Sending Kings, Pacers To Play First Games In India

The NBA today announced that the Kings and Pacers "will play two preseason games" in Mumbai, India, next fall. Kings Owner Vivek Ranadive grew up in Mumbai and has said that he "wanted his team to become the first in the NBA to play a game in his homeland." Ranadive purchased the Kings in '13, becoming the "first Indian majority owner of an NBA team." Since then he has "helped to infuse Indian culture into the NBA" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 12/20). The two games, set for Oct. 4-5, will mark the "first time a North American pro sports league will play games in India" (USA TODAY, 12/20).

Congressional Report Points To Failures At USOC, NGBs

A new report from a U.S. House subcommittee investing sexual abuse in the Olympic movement finds the USOC and the NGBs it oversees "have inconsistently applied policies and been slow to take action despite broad knowledge of abuse complaints." The report, set to be released today, "criticized a culture in the movement that focuses on reputation and the USOC's long-held lack of belief that it has authority over the NGBs, which 'contributed to a systemic failure' to protect athletes." In a statement, USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland said that the organization "has taken meaningful action since the House committee began its investigation, including strengthening athlete safety programs, policies and procedures as well as reforming how it engages" with the NGBs (USA TODAY, 12/20).

Indiana Officials: USA Gymnastics' Sex Abuse Policies Inadequate

USA Gymnastics' policy for handling sexual abuse allegations "still falls short of what is required by Indiana law," according to documents filed yesterday by the state attorney general's office. The attorney general's office, which has been investigating the NGB for almost a year, said that USAG's "current policy requires suspected child abuse or neglect to be reported to authorities within 24 hours, unless the organization knows authorities have already been notified." Indiana law "requires such allegations be reported immediately." The attorney general's office also "filed limited objections" to USAG's requests to "continue using the services of two consulting firms" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 12/20).

Nike Set To Release Q2 Earnings Report After Market Closes

Nike today will release its latest quarterly report "after the market closes," and analysts are expecting the company to "report earnings of 46 cents per share" on $9.16B of revenue (FINANCE.YAHOO.com, 12/19). Most analysts are "positive about" Nike's "brand innovations in North America and China on solid margins and global economic strength." But the uncertainties "include sales in foreign currencies and a drag from the tariff situation." However, Nike "almost always beats earnings-per-share estimates" (THESTREET.com, 12/20).

Source: CBS May Cut Ties With Nielsen When Contract Expires

CBS is "considering ending its longstanding contract with TV ratings provider Nielsen as it looks for new ways to measure audiences in the multiplatform universe." A source said that the net is "prepared to drop Nielsen’s measurement services if the two sides can’t come to an agreement by the end of this month." The source added that CBS’ current contract with Nielsen -- valued at more than $100M annually -- "expires at year’s end." A Nielsen rep indicated that CBS’ "threat to drop the service was posturing amid tough contract talks" (VARIETY.com, 12/19).

Texas Regents To Approve Deal With OVG For New Arena

Univ. of Texas System regents today are scheduled to approve a measure that will "turn the 6.64 acres just south of Mike A. Myers Stadium over to Oak View Group" for construction of a new arena to replace Frank Erwin Special Events Center. A source said that the "basketball configuration will be about 10,000 seats with the upper decks closed off for every game." The new arena’s "total capacity could reach 17,000." The Erwin Center "holds 16,540 for basketball." OVG "will build and manage the arena, giving UT approximately 60 dates annually for men’s and women’s basketball games, graduations and other school-related functions" (STATESMAN.com, 12/17).
