Sources: Toyota Nears Deals With U.S. NGBs Ahead Of '20 Games

By Ben Fischer

IOC TOP sponsor Toyota is beginning to implement its U.S. strategy for the '20 Tokyo Games, nearing deals in recent weeks to sponsor both USA Triathlon and USA Track & Field, sources said. Toyota would become Triathlon’s first-ever auto sponsor; Toyota would be USTAF’s first auto sponsor since BMW left in '16. The Triathlon deal is through '20. The length of the USATF deal is not known, and sources suggested a deal is done in principle but final negotiations continue.

Toyota and the NGBs both declined to comment. Many TOP sponsors augment their primary sponsorships with NGBs, which gives access to domestic events leading up to the Games and convenient connections to athletes. After joining the IOC’s global program in '17, Toyota signed with US Ski & Snowboarding, U.S. Figure Skating, USA Bobsled & Skeleton and U.S. Speedskating for the PyeongChang Games.

Fox Sees “TNF” Ratings Decline Amid Busy Night On TV

By Austin Karp

Fox and NFL Network combined to draw a 9.9 overnight rating for the Patriots’ 38-24 win over the Colts on “TNF,” down 11% from the comparable Patriots-Buccaneers game in Week 5 last year on CBS/NFL Net. That Pats-Bucs game remains the best Week 5 “TNF” overnight yet. The game last night had plenty of competition, up against Braves-Dodgers NLDS Game 1 on MLB Network, as well as heavy coverage of political news on cable TV. The combined audience for CNN, MSNBC and Fox News was up 41% compared to the same night in '17 as people continued to watch news around Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Two years ago, CBS/NFL Net combined for an 8.8 overnight for Cardinals-49ers, but that game was affected by Hurricane Matthew, with the Orlando-Daytona and West Palm Beach markets not reporting.Meanwhile, the 9.9 for Colts-Pats is up from what NBC/CBS averaged for their "TNF" games last season (9.6).

The '18 NBA China Games are underway in Shanghai, with the 76ers and Mavericks taking part in the 25th such game since the league's effort began in '04. It's amazing to see the progress that this nation has made since we first played games here."

Silver: "Everywhere I travel in China, I see evidence of the tremendous interest in this sport. Whether it's billboards that include Chinese players or NBA players who were born outside of China, whether it's the tremendous social media presence we have, or the enormous exposure we have through CCTV, BesTV and Tencent, there's no doubt that the Chinese people love basketball" (NBA.com, 10/5).

Billy Crystal, Jimmy Fallon Have Fun With Yankees' Playoff Run

Actor Billy Crystal, a lifelong Yankees fan, attended the Yankees-A's Wild Card Game and told host Jimmy Fallon, “I saw my first baseball game 62 years ago … (and) the magic of it has never changed. From my first game in 1956 seeing Mickey Mantle play ... it feels like it's still present." Crystal joked how Yankees RF Aaron Judge and retired Red Sox DH David Ortiz would “point to God” during their at-bats, but “when they make an error, nobody points up again." Crystal: "When they strike out, they don't go (looking up to the sky), 'Hey! What!? Come on! I'm still here'" (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 10/4).

NBC’s Fallon: “I want to say congrats to the New York Yankees, because last night they beat the Oakland A’s and got one step closer to the World Series. But now the players are nervous, because they're also one step closer to having to meet the president. … Great game for the Yankees. They won 7-2. The postgame locker room was nuts. The whole team drank almost as much as Brett Kavanaugh” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 10/4).
