FedEx Renews PGA Tour Sponsorship For 10 Years Through '27

By John Lombardo

The PGA Tour and FedEx have signed a 10-year sponsorship renewal of the FedExCup. The deal, which runs through '27, is the Tour’s most lucrative sponsorship. The renewal is double the number of years in length from the previous five-year extension signed by FedEx in '12. Financial terms were not disclosed. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said that the FedExCup’s current $35M in prize money, including a $10M payout to the winner, will increase, but he offered no specifics.

Monahan said that no decisions have been made regarding potential schedule changes to the current FedExCup season or its four-event playoff to avoid competition with the NFL. The FedExCup playoff format historically ends in late September with the Tour Championship.

Disney Earnings: ESPN's OTT, Skinny Bundle Strategies In Focus

Disney reports Q2 earnings after the market closes today, and investors "will be paying more attention than ever to the media giant's huge but challenged television business" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/8). Investors "will want an update from Disney on how ESPN is charting a path to remain dominant" (L.A. TIMES, 5/9). ESPN is the "most important part of Disney’s 'media networks' business." As "traditional cable struggles, Disney has signed onto several low-priced 'slim' internet-TV bundles and is working on its own 'over-the-top' digital product that is expected to launch later this year." Those deals "should help stabilize ESPN’s performance" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 5/9).

Root Sports Begins In-Market Streaming For Four MLB Clubs

By Eric Fisher

Root Sports has started authenticated in-market streaming for the Astros, Mariners, Pirates and Rockies. An in-market streaming deal between Root Sports and baseball’s digital arm had been reached prior to Opening Day, but public rollout was delayed due to technical issues. The introduction of the service for the four clubs, however, arrives without distribution from Comcast, which has a notable presence in each of those markets. Comcast confirmed it is not presently involved and has not reached a deal for in-market streaming of these clubs, but declined to offer more details. The Nationals, Orioles and Dodgers are now the only MLB clubs without the service.

NBA Continues Global Talent Push, Opening Academy In India

The NBA today opens an NBA Academy in India. The training center, located at Jaypee Greens Integrated sports complex in Delhi National Capital Region, will "train top male and female scholarship players selected through a country-wide search with NBA-level coaching" (ESPN.com, 5/9). This follows the launch of three NBA Academies in China and one in Senegal, and the league's plans "also include launching" a global academy in Canberra, Australia. The NBA "has an Indian owner" in the Kings' Vivek Ranadive, but a "player to galvanize a fan base has yet to arrive" (REUTERS, 5/9).

Trail Blazers Alter Logo Ahead Of Nike Taking Over NBA Gear

The Trail Blazers have unveiled a new logo "for the first time in 15 years," altering their familiar pinwheel design. The "red half of it has traded sides with the other part of the color equation, which is now white instead of silver-ish," and the "sharp lines at the ends of the pinwheel have been flattened." The logo "now tilts at a 45-degree angle, depicting Portland's geographic locale just above the 45th parallel." The team said that it made the changes, which take effect just as Nike becomes the NBA's uniform provider, with "fan input" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/8).

Venue For CMT Awards Shifted Due To Predators' Playoff Run

The '17 CMT Music Awards are moving from Bridgestone Arena to Music City Center, a smaller Nashville venue, because of the Predators' "extended run for the Stanley Cup." The awards show will air live on June 7 in primetime. CMT President Brian Phillips said that the network "always builds in a back-up plan." The net has "'flirted' with the possibility of a timing conflict between the CMT Music Awards and the Predators in past years" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 5/9).

Morning Hot Reads: The Name Game

The LEXINGTON HERALD-LEADER writes, "It was like a magic act performed on campus last week when officials yanked a sheet off a large picture of Commonwealth Stadium to reveal the rendering of the new name: 'Kroger Field.'... But it takes quite a bit more than that to formally alter the name of a 44-year-old venue that sits in a conspicuous place."

CRONKITE NEWS notes Sun Devil Stadium is in the "midst of the second phase" in a three-stage, $268M renovation project. When complete, Arizona State "will have an upgraded facility that could be attractive to companies looking for a naming-rights deal on a stadium."

The DETROIT FREE PRESS goes with the header, "How Do We Honor Joe Louis? Rename Cobo Center." With Joe Louis Arena scheduled for demolition, the city "should rename our convention center for Louis, thus removing the name of three-term Detroit Mayor Albert Cobo."
