Orioles' Adam Jones Gets Standing Ovation At Fenway Park

Orioles CF Adam Jones "received a standing ovation from the Red Sox crowd before his first at-bat" of last night's game at Fenway Park. This comes after Jones on Monday heard "racial taunts" from the crowd. Jones said of his reception last night, "Much appreciated. It was also much appreciated by the Boston Red Sox and MLB getting ahead of it" (ESPN.com, 5/3).

Today’s network morning shows all addressed the controversy surrounding Jones and the Red Sox. “CBS This Morning” and NBC’s “Today” both aired taped reports about 15 minutes into the broadcast, while ABC’s “GMA” ran its report about 45 minutes in. NBC teased the report in their opening with the headline, “Standing Up For What’s Right.” ABC featured appearances from ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith and Jessica Mendoza (THE DAILY).

SI Launching VR, Augmented Reality Content On Everest Climb

By Eric Fisher

SI today will debut “Capturing Everest,” a new virtual reality series also involving sister Time Inc. entity Life VR. The four-episode series, chronicling a bottom-to-top climb of Mt. Everest in the enhanced video format, will be available on the Life VR app and in 360-degree video at SI.com/capturing-everest. The debut of “Capturing Everest” comes as SI this week also releases its first-ever augmented reality issue. The front cover and select images inside the magazine can be scanned using a mobile device to activate additional multimedia content.

The cover itself features Jeff Glasbrenner, the first American amputee to climb Mt. Everest and a 25-time Ironman. The “Capturing Everest” project also involved digital studio Endemol Shine Beyond USA. SI in an editor’s letter this week described the VR and augmented reality projects as the "jumping-off point for a new idea of what a magazine can be."

Reports Say Dreamstyle Remodeling To Sponsor New Mexico Arena

Albuquerque-based home goods dealer Dreamstyle Remodeling reportedly has signed on to replace pizza chain WisePies as the naming-rights sponsor of the Univ. of New Mexico's basketball arena, also known as The Pit. Dreamstyle Remodeling CEO Larry Chavez "would not confirm the reports." But a news conference is scheduled for today, and UNM Assistant AD/Communications Frank Mercogliano said that the "event would involve naming rights" (ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL, 5/3).

NCAA Tournament Helps Time Warner Beat Expectations In Q1

Time Warner this morning reported that Q1 earnings "beat Wall Street estimates," helped in part by "stronger interest in the NCAA Basketball games it aired." Revenues increased 6% to $7.74B, with adjusted operating income up 7% to $2.2B for the three-month period ending in March. The Turner cable networks unit "scored with NCAA basketball," as this year marked the "second most-watched college tournament in 23 years." Revenues in the unit increased 6% to $3.1B "even as operating income fell" 6% to $1.2B (VARIETY.com, 5/3).

Wimbledon Increasing Money For Singles Champions, Total Prize Pot

Wimbledon organizers today said that singles tennis champions will receive $2.84M each (all figures US), an increase of about $250,000 for "both the men's and women's winner." The total prize pot increases to $40.8M, up from $36.3M last year. All England Club Chair Philip Brook said that the club "had 'taken into account' exchange rates, but that the 'Brexit effect' had not been instrumental in their calculations" (REUTERS, 5/3). Meanwhile, organizers confirmed that Wimbledon's second roofed court – Court No. 1 – "will be completed in time" for the '19 championships (TWITTER.com, 5/3).

Thank you for abiding me" (NPR.org, 5/3).

Tony Romo Could Push Fantasy Bill While Being Feted In Austin

Texas state legislators in Austin today will honor the career of Tony Romo, and while the former NFLer is in Austin, he is "expected to ask lawmakers to support a bill that would allow fantasy sports companies to operate in Texas." That bill "has stalled in the House Calendars Committee," and legislators "have long shunned anything that resembles gambling." But the issue of late "has split conservative lawmakers." Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones, who has a stake in DraftKings, "supports the legislation" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 5/3).

Quick Hits....

"This is a different world than the one I’ve existed in for 20 years. It’s a little like peeking over the neighbor’s fence. You’ve lived next door to your neighbor for a long time, but you never quite knew what their yard looked like" – Entercom Sports President Mike Dee, on his new position (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/3).

"My own impression was that it was overdue, a little late, and maybe I precipitated part of that. Misplaced loyalty in that sense, but it was the right move" – Bruins Owner Jeremy Jacobs, on the timing of coach Claude Julien's firing in February (BOSTON GLOBE, 5/3).

Morning Hot Reads: Hop, Skip And Draft

The DALLAS MORNING NEWS writes under the header, "The NFL Draft Just Drove Another Nail Into The College Bowl System's Coffin." The "question of whether star players can call it a season in December if their team isn't in the playoff has been answered by the NFL with a definitive, 'Sure, come on aboard.'" SI.com goes with, "Will More College Football Players Skip Bowl Games? A new NFL-College Divide Emerges."

The WASHINGTON POST writes, "Football players at Army, Navy and Air Force should be no less committed to their duty than, say, Prince Harry. That appears to be the reasonable position of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, who has issued a new order blocking military academy athletes from entering pro drafts straight out of school. But Mattis is only half-right."

Laugh Track: Hold My Beer....

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon noted after a play during Monday night's Raptors-Cavaliers playoff game, LeBron James "went into the crowd and almost drank a fan's beer." The broadcast aired footage of James taking the beer and almost drinking from it, with Fallon adding, “He was going to drink it until he saw how much the arena charges for beer. ‘What, $9.50 for a fake plastic bottle of beer!?’” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 5/2).

A Lighter Buzz....

Tourism agency Visit Salt Lake on Monday launched a new website and video titled, "There's nothing to do in Salt Lake" that features people "enjoying drinks and food at popular breweries, bars, restaurants and sporting venues." The words "no fun" and "no drinking" sarcastically flash across images in the video. The campaign comes after some Warriors players "talked about wishing they were playing the Clippers instead of the Jazz" in their second round playoff series, "mostly for the chance to have some time off" in L.A. rather than Salt Lake City (AP, 5/3).
