National Car Rental Gets Naming Rights To St. Louis Stadium

By Daniel Kaplan

National Car Rental today announced an agreement to name a prospective St. Louis football stadium for 20 years and $158M, a development that occurs as NFL owners are set to gather to discuss possibly moving the Rams to L.A. next year. The stadium would be called National Car Rental Field. The deal was arranged by the St. Louis stadium task force and signed with the St. Louis Regional Sports Authority, which would own the stadium. The Rams had no role in the deal and Owner Stan Kroenke wants to move the team to Inglewood, Calif.

National parent company Enterprise Holdings, which is privately owned, is headquartered in St. Louis. Enterprise Chief Marketing & Communications Officer Patrick Farrell "cited the league’s demographics as aligning with the car brand’s core customers."

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones this morning dismissed the naming-rights deal, saying $158M "would be enough to pay for a lobby" in a new L.A. stadium. He pegged the L.A. project cost at $3B. Jones is known to support Kroenke’s bid to relocate to Inglewood.

N.Y. Attorney General Launches Inquiry Into DraftKings, FanDuel

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has begun an inquiry into the "prospect that employees of daily fantasy football sites have won lucrative payouts based on inside information," asking DraftKings and FanDuel for a "range of internal data and details on how they prevent fraud." Schneiderman also "demanded that the companies turn over details of any internal investigations into their employees." The move "may shed light on the inner workings of the sites." The companies "have until Oct. 15 to respond" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/7).

Meanwhile, DraftKings today will announce it is sponsoring 14 NHL teams for the '15-16 season, which begins tonight. The daily fantasy provider is a new sponsor of the Flames, Flyers, Lightning, Maple Leafs, Oilers, Penguins and Sabres. The company already has agreements with the Avalanche, Blackhawks, Blues, Bruins, Kings, Rangers and Red Wings. DraftKings also has league rights with the NHL. The team deals all include extensive arena signage and electronic media. DraftKings-branded lounges are being opened at the home arenas of the Rangers, Kings, and Maple Leafs (Terry Lefton, Editor-at-Large).

Long Lines Outside Yankee Stadium Prior To AL Wild Card Game

Last night’s AL Wild Card game, which the Astros won 3-0, saw massive lines outside Yankee Stadium with fans waiting to get through security gates and into the ballpark. Yankees Exec Dir of Communications & Media Relations Jason Zillo said the situation was in part created by a temporary closure at Gate 6, a primary entry point, due to a medical emergency with a fan. The fan was treated by EMTs and police and taken to a local hospital, but the pregame closure of Gate 6 built up lines among what was already a sellout crowd of 50,113, the largest Yankees home crowd this season (Eric Fisher, Staff Writer).

Some fans waited in line for "an hour or more" to get in, and many "vented about the hold-up on social media" (N.Y. POST, 10/7). The lines "kept people waiting past first pitch" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 10/7).

Decision Expected Today On Where LSU-South Carolina Will Be Played

A final decision is expected by noon CT on whether to keep Saturday's LSU-South Carolina football game at Williams-Brice Stadium, as scheduled, "or move it to LSU's Tiger Stadium." A source said that the "first preference is to keep the game in Columbia, followed by playing the game at a neutral site, with the final alternative" to move the game to Baton Rouge. Options for playing in Atlanta, Charlotte or Jacksonville "apparently have been discarded." LSU SID Michael Bonnette said, "If we're asked to host this game in the next 24 hours, it's something we can certainly do" (THEADVOCATE.com, 10/6).

South Carolina officials "reached out to the Panthers about the possibility of moving" Saturday’s game to Bank of America Stadium. The Panthers "don’t play at home again until Oct. 25." But there are "obstacles to moving the game to Charlotte, including a scarcity of hotel rooms in the area because of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway." Also, the Panthers "recently re-seeded the stadium grass" (CHARLOTTEOBSERVER.com, 10/6).

SABMiller Rejects A-B InBev's Latest Takeover Offer Worth $104B

SABMiller today rejected a third takeover offer from A-B InBev valued at $104B, saying the proposal "very substantially undervalues" the world's second-largest brewer (WSJ.com, 10/7). A-B InBev had "turned the heat up" on SABMiller, "going public" with the offer. SABMiller's biggest shareholder, U.S. tobacco company Altria Group, had "recommended that SABMiller's management engage 'promptly and constructively' in talks" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/7).

UFC fighter Ronda Rousey appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” last night and discussed the online war of words with boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. after she won "Best Fighter" at the ESPYs. Rousey said she hasn’t gotten “any texts or calls. He still maintains he has no clue who I am. Every time I run into him I’m going to reintroduce myself every time. Maybe one day he’ll actually remember me.” Host Jimmy Fallon said, “I think he knows who you are.” Rousey on winning her last fight in under a minute, “I took my time.” Rousey on her upcoming fight with Holly Holm in Australia, “I don't have anything against her. Actor Eric Stonestreet appeared on ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last night and noted he was a Kansas City native and big Royals fan. Stonestreet said he also roots for the Dodgers since living in L.A. but the “royal blue is in my blood.” Stonestreet: “My goal is a Game 7 World Series Royals versus the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw pitches a great game in Game 7 and we hit a walk-off home run to win the Series.” Host Jimmy Kimmel noted Stonestreet filmed a “video for the Royals just cheering them on and showing your support and they played it in the stadium." Stonestreet said the video was used to “get the crowd going.” Kimmel added, “Now to return that favor the Royals have made a video cheering you on for your appearance on this show tonight” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 10/6).

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel said of the Draftkings/FanDuel controversy, “These are giant companies that make a lot of money and do a lot of advertising. Without DraftKings or FanDuel, the only commercials we'd have during football would be Matthew McConaughey driving around talking to himself. So we owe them a lot and it's a big deal. DraftKings and FanDuel issued a joint statement assuring their customers they've seen no evidence of any wrongdoing and that integrity is of the utmost importance and blah, blah, blah. I tell you, it's a shame to see allegations of cheating in any way taint this imaginary competition that people love so much” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 10/6).
