Sources: Raiders Owner Held Talks About Moving To San Antonio

Sources said that Raiders Owner Mark Davis and "two top lieutenants" in the organization met recently with "several San Antonio officials to discuss the potential of moving his NFL team from the Bay Area to the Alamo City." Davis met with the officials on the weekend of July 18. Davis and his associates reportedly "spent two or three days" in San Antonio, "visiting the Alamodome and other places" (SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 7/30).

When asked yesterday about the visit, Davis said, "Former San Antonio mayor Henry Cisneros is a friend, and Henry suggested I take the opportunity to meet with some city officials while I was in town. I have nothing further to discuss on the topic" (Mult., 7/29).

Pipe Break Near UCLA Could Curtail Use Of Pauley Pavilion

A "massive pipe break" yesterday flooded UCLA and surrounding areas with "millions of gallons of water and threatened the near-term use of Pauley Pavilion." UCLA officials last night said that they "would be unable to determine whether athletic teams would be able to use Pauley Pavilion this season until the cleanup is done." Crews used "squeegees and water vacuums to clear water and silt from the floor" of the arena. More than three and a half hours after the line ruptured, "about an inch of water remained on the floor" (L.A. TIMES, 7/30).

"Festive" 60,000-Plus On Hand For ManU-Inter Milan At FedExField

A crowd of 61,238 attended the Manchester United-Inter Milan Guinness Int'l Champions Cup match at FedExField, where the "scene before kickoff was light and festive." Ticket holders in the upper deck were "allowed to move closer at no extra charge," and "some said they received free tickets." The stadium is "not an ideal soccer venue," and it "added to the list of shortcomings with a pregame video-board message stating United's home stadium is 'Old Traddord'" (WASHINGTON POST, 7/30).

Meanwhile, ManU is "scheduled to visit the White House today" (LONDON TIMES, 7/30).

Braves Expected To Name Development Team For Mixed-Use Project

The Braves as soon as this week are expected to announce a "deal with the development team that will oversee" a $400M mixed-use development near their new Cobb County ballpark. Sources said that the club "will tap a joint venture team" that includes Fuqua Development, Pope & Land Enterprises and Pollack Shores Real Estate Group. Georgia-based Batson-Cook Development, a subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Kajima, "will be an equity partner in the project," the sources said (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 7/30).

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo on the Q2 earnings call "highlighted the 2014 FIFA World Cup as driving up Twitter usage," but he also said that "product changes were the primary growth factors." Twitter "gained a net 16 million monthly active users in Q2, the most in five quarters" (VARIETY.com, 7/29).

NFL, Goodell Continue To Receive Criticism For Ray Rice Suspension

Criticism of how the NFL handled the Ray Rice situation continues today, with the WASHINGTON POST's Mike Wise writing this was a moment for Commissioner Roger Goodell to "show that domestic violence will not be tolerated on his watch," but his "handling of the issue shows a dearth of sensitivity." The BUFFALO NEWS' Jerry Sullivan writes of Goodell, "The Enforcer came across as The Enabler. ... It makes Goodell look weak and inconsistent." A SACRAMENTO BEE editorial states NFL officials "ought to listen to the outcry from across the nation and reconsider the short suspension."

So the only conversation I could come up with to this lovely woman who was helping us was, 'So the Bills might be going to Toronto, I hear,' and she just gave this incredibly serious, sad reaction to my small talk.
