Donald Sterling's CNN Interview Adds To Outrage Directed Against Him

In “an extraordinary television interview that deepened the anger over his ownership of the Clippers, Donald Sterling attacked Lakers great Magic Johnson, suggested that African Americans have not done enough to help their community and blamed the media for creating the turmoil that envelops his team and his family” (L.A. TIMES, 5/13). NBC’s “Today” led with Sterling and reported he “appeared out of touch” (“Today,” NBC, 5/13). Sterling's "erratic, strange performance" gave the "impression of somebody who was not mentally clicking on all cylinders” (VARIETY.com, 5/12)

Among Sterling’s comments:
“What does he do for the black people? He doesn't do anything …. Can you tell me, big Magic Johnson, what has he done?"
“Here is a man who is – I don't know if I [should] say this. He acts so holy. I mean, he made love to every girl in every city in America. And he had AIDS."
"The players don’t hate me, the sponsors don’t hate me, the fans don’t hate me. It’s all the media pushing it. … The media hates."

L.A. TIMES P1 header: “Contrite, Defiant Sterling Only Fuels Further Outrage.”

Meanwhile, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement around 10:00pm ET yesterday to apologize to Johnson as “he continues to be dragged into this situation and be degraded by such a malicious and personal attack.” Johnson is scheduled to appear on Anderson Cooper’s “360” today to offer his reaction (THE DAILY).

Magic Johnson on his Twitter feed last night wrote, "I'd rather be talking about these great NBA Playoffs than Donald Sterling's interview. ... After this week, no more Sterling talk. Just the NBA Playoffs, my @Dodgers and my @LA_Sparks!" (TWITTER.com, 5/12).

Clippers coach Doc Rivers said of the interview, "Whatever it is, that doesn’t sound like much of an apology to me" (ESPNLA.com, 5/12).

The network morning shows all featured Sterling’s CNN interview prominently. “CBS This Morning” and “Today” both led with it; ABC's "GMA" had it as its second story (THE DAILY).

Rochelle Sterling, Lawyer Vow To Fight Efforts To Push Them Out

Clippers co-Owner Rochelle Sterling granted interviews to the N.Y. TIMES and NBC's "Today" show, where she was the first story after her husband's appearance with Anderson Cooper. Asked by Savannah Guthrie if she believes the NBA can force her husband to sell, she said, “I think I agree with what their decision is. I don’t agree with what their decision is for me. I wholly feel that I’ve done nothing wrong. ... Why am I the victim when he’s the perpetrator? If somebody kills somebody, does the wife have to stand trial too?” Asked how far she would fight any NBA attempt to force her out: “As far as I can go" ("Today," NBC, 5/13).

The N.Y. TIMES goes with the header, "Clippers’ Co-Owner: 'I Didn’t Do Anything Wrong' ... Rochelle Sterling Tells Her Side of the Story." Her attorney, Pierce O'Donnell, said of taking on the NBA, "We're ready to go to war if we have to." O'Donnell, on possible legal action, "I want to know a lot of different things about the records of the NBA and what information they have about the conduct or misconduct of other owners that was not acted upon" (N.Y. TIMES, 5/13).

ESPN Upfront: Network Will Emphasize Multiple Screen Access

By John Ourand

ESPN hosts its upfront advertising presentation at the Minskoff Theatre in Manhattan this morning. The network will be pushing an "always on" message, meaning that viewers access ESPN programming on multiple screens in or out of the home. That message will be important for the media company during its upcoming coverage of the FIFA World Cup, when execs believe many viewers will be watching the weekday afternoon matches from work and bars. Meanwhile, the network also will announce contact extensions for "PTI" hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon.

Rams Expect Added Interest When Introducing Michael Sam Today

The Rams "plan on business as usual at this summer's training camp, but are making allowances" today when they introduce their draft picks, including DE Michael Sam. Rams GM Les Snead "expects a media crush and intense interest" in Sam. Snead on Monday said, "We spent yesterday talking about that. ... We definitely got to be aware that Michael Sam and the social impact of the pick needs a special place. We'll prepare for that. We'll handle it" (REUTERS, 5/12).

Snead: "After (Tuesday), you do nothing different. We've already talked to Michael and his people and told him he's here to play football. If the major networks, Good Morning America, the Today Show or CNN come calling, guess what? You're not doing that" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 5/13).

Chevy Signs On As Official Truck Of NHRA In Multiyear Deal

By Tripp Mickle, Staff Writer

Chevrolet today will announce that it has signed on to become the official truck of the NHRA, replacing Ford. Financial terms of the deal were not available. The multiyear agreement means Chevrolet's Silverado and Suburban brands will be featured prominently at the track during NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events. They will be used by the NHRA Safety Safari, the safety personnel crew that works at dragways during competition.

GM’s Chevrolet brand last year signed on to title sponsor the U.S. Nationals held each Labor Day weekend near Indianapolis. GM Performance Division Manager Craig Shantz said, “This sponsorship increases our involvement. It’s the right fit. Chevrolet and Chevrolet Performance have a very loyal fanbase involved with the NHRA and drag racing.”

Final Jeopardy!

“Written about the U.S. occupation of the Philippines, a Kipling poem said, ‘take up’ this now-controversial phrase.”

Last night’s edition of “Jeopardy!” featured the category “Olympic Athletes Beyond The Games.”

Laugh Track....Check The Tape

NBC’s Jimmy Fallon: “Donald Sterling broke his silence in an interview with Anderson Cooper, where he insists he’s not a racist. What better way to prove you’re not a racist than by sitting down with the whitest man on TV? … Sterling also said that he’s entitled to make one mistake, which would’ve been a better defense if he didn’t make like eight mistakes at once. You got caught on tape being racist to your mistress. That’s at least three things you did wrong right there. … The International Olympic Committee is now considering London as a backup host city for the 2016 Olympics, if Rio isn’t ready. I’d like to officially congratulate London for being the host of the 2016 Olympics. … With their loss to the Braves yesterday, the Chicago Cubs became the third team in baseball history to lose 10,000 games. The poor Cubs, they can’t even win a losing contest” ("The Tonight Show,” NBC, 5/12).

CBS’ David Letterman: “How about this weather? … It's 81 and cloudy, like Donald Sterling. I think you all know this by now, Donald Sterling is the NBA’s first bigoted owner. Donald Sterling did an interview with Anderson Cooper. … During the interview, he explained to him that he’s been meeting with his legal team and he has finally decided that he is sorry. The interview with Anderson Cooper was conducted at Donald Sterling’s sprawling ranch, ‘The Triple K’” (“Late Show,” CBS, 5/12).

Comedy Central's Jon Stewart said in a new segment called "Wow, Did Not See That Coming" last night, "Michael Sam becomes the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team on Saturday. Truly a landmark moment for the NFL, an amazing moment for the gay community, and boy, is he close to his agent." The broadcast aired footage of Sam kissing his boyfriend. More Stewart: "What an incredible accomplishment. I just know the NFL, a place where men hug each other professionally, will welcome him with open arms." Stewart added, "The next item I totally did not see coming, an old, cranky racist apologizing for hate speech." After video of Donald Sterling's CNN interview was aired, Stewart said Sterling was "taking back his words of intolerance, as well as reminding us what the Cowardly Lion looks like without makeup" ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart," Comedy Central, 5/12).

Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert said, "If you managed to watch some TV this weekend, I hope you caught up on the NFL Draft because it's the only place these days you can still see college graduates getting jobs. As always the big story was which player would be the No. 1 pick of the last eight picks of the 7th round." Colbert on Michael Sam being selected by the Rams: "Sam's war on traditional gridiron values started as soon as he got the phone call." The broadcast aired video of Sam kissing and hugging his boyfriend, followed by Colbert blowing a whistle and throwing a yellow penalty flag. Colbert: "Holding! Unnecessary tenderness! Folks, this is just wrong. In the NFL, sexuality is supposed to take place off camera, and the fans should only find out about it when the charges are filed" ("The Colbert Report," Comedy Central, 5/12).

Final Jeopardy....

“What is ‘The White Man’s Burden?’”

Correct responses to the “Olympic Athletes Beyond The Games” category:
