NHL Moves Closer To Deal For '14 Sochi Games Participation
A five-hour-plus meeting in N.Y. yesterday "failed to produce an agreement to send NHL players" to the '14 Sochi Games, but the officials from the league, NHLPA and IIHF said that they were "confident a deal is within reach." NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman: "We're not completely in agreement on everything yet. But we're getting closer on the open issues" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/2). One report pegs a formal agreement as being "at least 10 days away" (GLOBE & MAIL, 7/2).
The various sides "need to meet internally to sign off on any pact." IIHF President Rene Fasel starting today "plans to get together with various international groups," while NHLPA Exec Dir Donald Fehr next week "will brief the players" during a multi-day Exec Board meeting (AP, 7/1).
