MLB, D'Backs Pay Tribute To 19 Fallen Arizona Firefighters

MLB yesterday honored the 19 Arizona firefighters who died fighting the Yarnell wildfire, and the D'Backs have "planned a series of tributes for his week." A moment of silence was observed prior to all MLB games played yesterday. The D'Backs wore black arm bands "and will for the rest of this series" against the Mets at Citi Field. When they return home Friday, they will wear a "white memorial patch that will remain on their jerseys the rest of the season" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/2). The Mets and D'Backs both had No. 19 "Yarnell" jerseys hanging in their dugouts (Mult., 7/1).

Meanwhile, Golden Boy Promotions has canceled the Phoenix stop in the Floyd Maywether Jr.-Canelo Alvarez press tour "out of respect for the fallen firefighters." The event was originally scheduled for today at noon PT (AZCENTRAL.com, 7/1). The Suns and WNBA Mercury today will give out shirts to "anyone who makes a monetary donation to a fund supporting families affected by the Yarnell wildfire." The drive runs from 10:30am-7:00pm at U.S. Airways Center (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/2).
