NBC To Significantly Increase Live Streaming Of Sports Events

NBC today will formally announce plans to offer live digital streams of "all its marquee sports events," including those carried by Golf Channel and NBC Sports Network. NBCSports.com "will go from live streaming about 300 hours last year (excluding Olympic coverage) to about 4,000 hours this year – and go from streaming about 110 events last year to about 1,000 events in 2013." Streamed events will include all NHL playoff games as well as MLS, EPL, Izod IndyCar Series and F1 (USA TODAY, 4/11).

Source: NBA Asks One Kings Bid Group To Cover The Other's Cost

By Daniel Kaplan

The NBA has asked the group bidding to keep the Kings in Sacramento that if they win, to cover the $30M the competing Seattle group would lose by not getting the club, a source said. The NBA declined to comment. The Seattle group, led by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and hedge fund manager Chris Hansen, has a purchase agreement with the Kings owners, the Maloof family, which includes a $30M non-refundable deposit. Were the Kings to stay in Sacramento, the Seattle group would lose that money. But not wanting Seattle to be discouraged if they do not get the team, the source said, the league wants to make the group’s effort whole. Presumably that would be a show from the NBA that even if Seattle were not to get the team, the league remains high on the market.

The Sacramento group tomorrow is expected to submit its final package to the NBA, as well as announce some new investors.

N.C. Senate Today Could Approve BofA Stadium Funding Measure

A measure allowing the city of Charlotte to help finance Bank of America Stadium renovations "could win final approval" today in the state Senate after "sailing through" the Senate Finance Committee. The bill could generate up to $110M, and it already has passed the state House. But it "falls short" of the $144M in local taxes the NFL Panthers had originally asked for, and it "remains unclear whether it's enough to tie the team to the city and, if so, for how long" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/11).

Red Sox Sellout Streak Ends As Attendance Dips Below 31,000

The Red Sox' 794-game regular-season sellout streak ended last night, as expected, when a crowd of 30,862 attended the rain-delayed game against the Orioles, the "smallest crowd at Fenway" since a game in April '03 against the Royals. Including the postseason, the streak spanned 820 games. Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said, "We know part of the reason it's over was that we failed last year. ... Hopefully the focus of this is that it was a remarkable run for the team and for our fans" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/11).

The BOSTON HERALD's John Tomase writes, "For a long time, the sellout streak captured what it meant to be a Red Sox fan, with interest in one of baseball's signature franchises reaching unprecedented levels. ... Its time had also come. Ownership knows how much healing remains, but last night represented another step in the right direction" (BOSTON HERALD, 4/11).

Last Track....Bridging The Gulf

New USC men’s basketball coach Andy Enfield appeared on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” last night and host Jay Leno asked, “The big question: Where the hell is Florida Gulf Coast University?” Enfield: “Well, it’s on the gulf coast of Florida.” Enfield said of the team’s success in the NCAA tournament, “The great thing about it is, a few weeks ago, not too many people knew where FGCU was. Now the whole nation does.” Enfield said of the difficulty of recruiting, “There’s a Gulf Coast Community College on the panhandle of Florida so I’d be on the phone and they thought we were a community college or junior college. So here I am trying to sell FGCU and I’d be on the phone for 15 minutes and they’d say, ‘Hey coach, I’m not going to junior college.’ I’d have to explain, ‘No, we’re a Division I university.’” Enfield said of raising money from alumni, “I remember going to a restaurant in Naples, about 50 FGCU alumni were there. My job was to speak and try to raise some money. So I’m looking out in the crowd during my speech and I realize that they're 25, 27, 32 years old. Those are our old alumni. So I took my hat off and said, ‘Let’s do the pass the hat,’ and we raised $72” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 4/10).

NBC’s Jay Leno: “Charlie Sheen on the show tonight, here to talk about his hit TV show ‘Anger Management.’ In fact, they're adding a new character this year, Rutgers coach Mike Rice” (“The Tonight Show,” NBC, 4/10).

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel: “U.S. and South Korean officials today said they are highly confident that North Korea will launch a medium range missile anytime now, which I guess means that Dennis Rodman failed” (“Jimmy Kimmel Live,” ABC, 4/10).

CBS’ David Letterman: “To go to a Major League Baseball game at Yankee Stadium, $365 for a family of four. It’s getting so that an American family of four really can’t afford anymore to scream obscenities at the Red Sox. Here’s a movie you're going to want to go see, speaking of baseball. It’s called ‘42.’ It’s about the heroic story of Jackie Robinson breaking into Major League Baseball with the ... Dodgers. They say that Meryl Streep as Jackie Robinson is unbelievable. It’s about Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball and you think, ‘Thank goodness.’ I mean, take a look at things now. We have a President who is black, a Supreme Court Justice who is Latino and a Speaker of the House who is orange” (“Late Show,” CBS, 4/10).

Top Ten....Wine & Diner

Last night’s Top Ten list was “Top Ten Things Overheard At The Denny’s Wedding.” Letterman said, “Last week, a couple form Iowa became the first to be married in the new wedding chapel in a Las Vegas Denny’s. It’s worse than I suspected. Denny’s now has a wedding chapel. You can just feel the grease” (“Late Show,” CBS, 4/10).
