NHL Labor Negotiations Begin Critical Phase Today In Toronto

NHL labor talks resume today and tomorrow in Toronto, and with 25 days left until the CBA expires Sept. 15, "time has become a critical factor." The timeline "raises the threat of the NHL enduring its fourth labor dispute in 20 years." More talks are scheduled for next week in N.Y. (AP, 8/21). The sides have agreed to devote this week's sessions to "core economic issues." It is "time to see how much each side is willing to move off its current position," and the tone of talks "should offer a good indication of whether there's still a chance a new deal can be completed" (CP, 8/21).

With the possibility of a lockout looming, the Panthers have closed their third annual rookie camp and tournament. The Sept. 15-19 event "was to include rookies from the Lightning, Hurricanes and Bruins." The Red Wings last week also canceled their rookie camp (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 8/21).
