Chiefs' ultimate question: Renovate Arrowhead or build new home?

The Chiefs are in the middle of discussions about whether to build a new stadium or renovate their current home, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, and team owner Clark Hunt said the ultimate decision will come down to “what’s best for the future of the franchise (and) what’s best for our fan base.” Hunt noted the Chiefs are “trying to work in tandem with the Royals” as the MLB team is going through the early stages of building a new ballpark to replace Kauffman Stadium. Arrowhead turned 50 years old during the NFL season, but Hunt believes it is “still one of the best places to watch a football game in the country” (“Cody & Gold,” KCSP-AM, 2/7).

GENERATING REVENUE A MUST: Hunt said that the Chiefs hope to have the stadium situation “sorted out in the next couple of years.” He noted the importance of generating revenue from a stadium, pointing out that some facilities built as little as 20 years ago are “now being torn down so that something else can be built that has more of the bells and whistles that you need from a revenue standpoint today.” Hunt: “It’s a very important part of the equation to being successful because there is a financial race going on behind the scenes that’s not about making money, but it’s about having the financial resources so that you can have a championship team. That’s very important, and the bar does seem to get raised every couple of years” (“SportsBeat KC,” KANSASCITY.com, 2/7).
