Ken Griffey Jr. Purchases Ownership Stake In Sounders

The Sounders said that Baseball HOFer Ken Griffey Jr. and his family "have joined the ownership group of the club," according to Ben Arthur of SEATTLEPI.com. The club said that the Griffey family's ownership stake "was finalized earlier this year before the COVID-19 pandemic." In Griffey, the Sounders "land arguably Seattle's biggest sports icon." Griffey joins the Sounders' "already star-studded ownership group," which includes Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, his wife Ciara and rapper Macklemore. Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke and his wife, Tara, also joined the group last month (SEATTLEPI.com, 11/17). Griffey said that his wife Melissa being a former soccer player "was key to joining" the Sounders. Griffey: "This is a family decision, but it's mainly she's been with me and I know she loves soccer so much. And it all comes back to one city where we all started" (SEATTLE TIMES, 11/18).
