Artists Reinterpret Classic Baseball Cards For Topps' Project 2020

Topps recruited a "wide range" of 20 artists to reinterpret classic cards for its Project 2020 effort, with the 400 cards and some artist proofs to be "sold over a period of roughly 40 weeks in limited quantities," according to Peter Abraham of the BOSTON GLOBE. The cards "have been a hit with collectors, selling out quickly." The coronavirus pandemic "altered the original release schedule, but card collectors and fans of the artists have embraced the designs." Topps Dir of New Product Development & eCommerce Jeff Heckman said, "It's exciting for us to have nontraditional offers and take a look at what baseball cards can be." Abraham noted the artists "will re-create cards" featuring current and former players such as Ted WIlliams, Robert Clemente, Ken Griffey Jr., Sandy Koufax, Willie Mays, Ichiro Suzuki and Mike Trout, "among others" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/15).
