Liga MX Launches FIFA Esports Tournament for Its Players

Top-tier Mexican soccer league Liga MX has launched a FIFA tournament for its players to compete against each other in the popular soccer video game. The eLigaMX by BBVA Tournament will start and be shown on TUDN in the U.S.

Each of the 18 LigaMX clubs will be represented by three players from the current rosters. Those players will play EA Sports’ FIFA 20 on Playstation 4, competing with the same clubs they play for in real life. The esports tournament will consist of 17 match-days through June 7, with its schedule mirroring the head-to-head matches that were scheduled in the real life LigaMX season before COVID-19 suspended play on March 15.

“We hope our fans enjoy the broadcast and the opportunity to see their favorite players battle it out like never before,” Juan Carlos Rodriguez, president of Sports at Univision, said in a statement.

Miami-based Univision owns TUDN, a Spanish-language soccer network broadcasting in the U.S. The network will broadcast up to three esports matches per day, with games also streaming on TUDN.com and the TUDN app. Broadcast commentary will be provided by TUDN talent alongside special guest commentary by Liga MX players.

Necaxa and Monterrey will face off in the first digital match this Friday at 3 p.m. ET on TUDN. The tournament will conclude with an eight-team single elimination playoff in June.
