World TeamTennis Gifts $1,000 To Players, Coaches

World TeamTennis will "distribute $1,000 each to roughly 60 players and coaches as a small measure of support while pro tennis remains in limbo," according to Dan Wolken of USA TODAY. WTT CEO Carlos Silva said that the idea to distribute the gifts "came in a conversation with Fred Luddy, a tech billionaire who became majority owner of the WTT" in '17. Wolken notes along with the money came a letter "thanking the players for being part of WTT and ensuring them that it was a no-strings-attached gift that was in addition to whatever prize money they win this season." As of now, the WTT is "still on for a season that would begin July 12 with teams in nine cities." Silva said that the WTT "could potentially play matches without fans but that it was too early to speculate what might happen this summer." Wolken notes since WTT matches are "all played on one court, it is an easier event to pull off logistically than a full ATP tournament" (USA TODAY, 4/7).
