Shutdown Creates Window To Resolve USWNT-USSF Dispute

The USWNT's gender-discrimination case originally had a court date scheduled for May 5GETTY IMAGES

The current holding pattern that the coronavirus pandemic has placed on sports "could end up being a positive" in the case of the USWNT and its "contentious dispute" with the U.S. Soccer Federation, according to Ann Killion of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The USWNT's gender-discrimination case "originally had a court date scheduled for May 5." But with California courts "not only shut down for the time being but likely growing a huge backlog of cases, that date is no longer plausible." With the Tokyo Games now pushed back at least a year, "everyone on both sides has time on their hands" to reflect and "perhaps reach an agreement." How new USSF President Cindy Parlow Cone "changes things remains to be seen." She said, "Settling this dispute is only the first step. The next step is a long process. A lot of damage has been done. We have to rebuild that trust and that relationship, not only with the players but with fans and everyone engaged. It’s not going to happen overnight." Killion notes there now is "a lot of time to do that work," and maybe that "can be a positive" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 4/7).
