Flames Exec Ken King Passes Away After Battle With Cancer

Calgary Sports & Entertainment Vice Chair & CEO KEN KING died Wednesday after a "courageous battle with cancer" at the age of 68, according to Eva Ferguson of the CALGARY HERALD. King was "seen as a visionary" for the Flame's future in the "increasingly competitive" NHL. He "pushed hard for a new arena that he believed would bring tremendous value" to the franchise. His "dream came true last summer when Calgary city council and Flames owners reached a deal on a new arena and events complex, with both sides evenly splitting" its $550M cost. In his final years, King was "instrumental in the creation of the initial plans" for the project. In addition, King was "at the helm during the Flames’ memorable run" to the '04 Stanley Cup Finals (CALGARY HERALD, 3/13).
