Moreno Undecided On Renovating Angel Stadium, Building New Venue

Angels Owner Arte Moreno said that he has "not decided whether he would replace Angel Stadium or renovate it," according to Shaikin & Torres of the L.A. TIMES.  In December, SRB Management, a company affiliated with Moreno, "agreed to buy the 153-acre site" -- the ballpark and the surrounding parking lots -- for $325M. Moreno yesterday said that the Angels would play in their current ballpark for "at least the next three to five years, the time frame he estimated would be needed to build a new stadium elsewhere in the parking lot." While the team studies whether to pursue a new or renovated venue, Moreno said that said he "would continue to invest in Angel Stadium for cleanliness, safety and fan experience." Moreno: "A lot of people are looking at bigger, more fun gathering areas, so we look at that." Moreno said he expects to deliver a development plan within the next four months, “which will give us a macro look of what we, in a perfect world, would like to build over the next 20 or 30 years" (L.A. TIMES, 2/18). Meanwhile, the City of Anaheim said that officials’ "closed-door discussions about selling Angel Stadium were legal and they won’t be rescinding their vote on the deal." This follows allegations by an attorney "alleging city officials improperly kept from the public their decision to pursue a sale rather than a lease" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 2/18).
