Facility Notes

In California, Alicia Robinson notes a Jan. 19 letter sent from attorney Kelly Aviles "alleges city officials violated the state's open meetings law and thwarted public involvement" before the Anaheim City Council's Dec. 20 vote to sell the 153-acre Angel Stadium property to a business partnership of Angels Owner Arte Moreno. If the city "doesn't resolve the issue within 30 days by rescinding the council's key decisions on the stadium sale and holding future discussions of the issue in public, Aviles said the residents she represents could file a lawsuit challenging the city's actions." City officials yesterday "denied any wrongdoing in how the deal was negotiated" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 1/22).

GRAB THOSE INNER TUBES: UCF AD Danny White said that McNamara Cove, a "600-foot lazy river with pools and sand volleyball courts" that will be located next to Spectrum Stadium, is "progressing on schedule." UCF officials said that they see the cove as a "potential source of revenue, selling tailgating memberships for the space." The school announced it is "selling 250 all-inclusive membership packages to the cove." White said that while they "aren't sold out yet," once fans "actually see the finished product, demand should increase" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 1/21).

EXPANDING THEIR FOOTPRINT: In San Jose, George Avalos notes a "dramatic expansion of the Sharks Ice Complex in San Jose is in the works, a project that would add two ice rinks and more than double the size of the facility." The existing Sharks Ice facility, Solar4America Ice at San Jose, would be "nearly 385,000 square feet in size once construction is complete and 204,000 square feet are added." Solar4America is the official training facility for the Sharks and the home arena for the San Jose State hockey team (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 1/22).
