Trump To Meet With LA28, USOPC Personnel Tomorrow

President Trump will meet with LA28 and USOPC officials behind closed doors in L.A. tomorrow, where he will be briefed on preparations for the ‘28 Games and ongoing operations in the U.S. Olympic industry. Under IOC rules, local organizing committees must obtain a signature from the President promising the federal government’s cooperation with the staging of the Games. That primarily means assistance on security and travel matters, though a wide range of federal agencies are potentially involved. The Olympics are mostly funded through private money, but the Olympics are typically designated as a “national security special event” by the federal government. The Trump administration already gave that assurance when L.A. was pursuing the '24 Games three years ago, but it must be re-issued now that L.A. has agreed to host a different Olympics. It is expected that Trump also will hear about preparations for Team USA’s upcoming trip to the Tokyo Games. The meeting comes after Trump spent part of yesterday at the Daytona 500, where he was warmly greeted while serving as the event's Grand Marshal.
