Adam Silver Calls Ongoing Altitude-Comcast Dispute A "Bad Situation"

Altitude Sports has not aired on Comcast or Dish Network since their contracts expired in AugustNBAE/GETTY IMAGES

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver during his state of the league address Saturday said he had met with Nuggets Owner Stan Kroenke and President Josh Kroenke over the Altitude-Comcast carriage impasse, and the team execs are "extraordinarily frustrated," according to Mike Singer of the DENVER POST. Silver: "It’s a bad situation for everyone, and I’m incredibly sympathetic to those fans that live in Colorado and haven’t been able to get those games." Altitude Sports "hasn’t aired on Comcast or Dish Network since their contracts expired at the end of August," though the RSN did "reach a multiyear agreement with DirecTV on Oct. 31" (DENVER POST, 2/16). Silver said the league's involvement in the dispute "has been to be helpful to both sides." However, THE ATHLETIC's Nick Kosmider wrote it "doesn’t appear as though the league has a clear answer for the problem." Kroenke Sports & Entertainment Exec VP & CEO Matt Hutchings has said that Altitude held "exploratory conversations about expanding to streaming platforms like Amazon, Roku or Sling," but "distribution concerns have kept those talks from advancing to anything substantive." Kosmider: "None of that is lost on Silver. The question is whether, at any point this season, the league, owners and Comcast officials will be able to fix a problem that has dragged on in Colorado and the surrounding region for more than five months" (THEATHLETIC.com, 2/15).
