Karl-Anthony Towns Looks To Expand Profile Beyond The Court

T'Wolves C Karl-Anthony Towns and his business partner Chucky Anthony are trying to cross over "into the pop culture consciousness by building and cultivating entertainment interests away from the court," according to Jon Krawczynski of THE ATHLETIC. Towns, now in his fifth NBA season, has made cameo appearances in movies and television shows and has "endorsements with Gatorade, NBA2K and Beats By Dre, among others." He also has a "vibrant YouTube channel that features irreverent videos" of he and Anthony "navigating everyday life." Earlier this year, he had a cameo in the film, "What Men Want," and "more is on the way." Towns met Anthony, a "former minor league baseball player turned videographer," through a mutual friend three years ago. Their working relationship started when Towns’ agent, CAA's Jess Holtz, "asked Anthony to do an eBay commercial." The way Anthony handled the situation "got Towns thinking about how he could help him expand his footprint beyond the basketball court." Anthony "started by taking videos and photos of Towns and posting them to Instagram." But over the last 18 months or so, their approach has "expanded into the storytelling realm." Towns has "always leaned to the more playful and goofy end of the personality spectrum," and he and Anthony "try to show the comedy in the more mundane aspects of their lives." The way Towns sees it, the "more sides he can show while all eyes are on him right now, the more opportunities that will open for him and his friend down the road" (THEATHLETIC.com, 11/29).
