ESPN, Marvel Collaborate To Celebrate Top CFB Games

Marvel artists collaborated with ESPN to create the 10 special coversESPN

ESPN and Marvel have "teamed up to recognize five of college football's 10 greatest games in a unique way, with special comic-book themed covers based off original covers," with the '73 Sugar Bowl between Alabama and Notre Dame "nabbing the 10th spot on the list," according to Ben Flanagan of the BIRMINGHAM NEWS. Marvel artists "plucked a cover" from '16's "Civil War II" run by Brian Michael Bendis (writer), David Marquez (artist) and Justin Ponsor (colorist). On the cover, Alabama's Big Al mascot "steps in for Iron Man, who throws a punch at the Notre Dame leprechaun (subbing for Sam Wilson's Captain America)" (BIRMINGHAM NEWS, 11/5). In Pennsylvania, Mark Wogenrich notes another cover pays homage to Penn State's 27-23 win over Georgia in the '83 Sugar Bowl. The cover "reimagines a 1964 book from Marvel's 'Tales of Suspense'" (Allentown MORNING CALL, 11/5).
