Genius Sports Launches Live-Streaming Platform Called GeniusLive

Genius Sports is making a play into the field of automated video production. The sports data company has announced the launch of GeniusLive, an end-to-end live-streaming platform that’s initially looking to serve basketball, volleyball and other indoor sports.

Using AI-powered algorithms, GeniusLive can automatically track and capture action from live sporting events, aiming to eliminate the need for expensive hardware as well as in-venue production and personnel. GeniusLive streams will be integrated with commentary, graphics and statistics. The platform can also produce automated highlights from the action.

The footage from GeniusLive is captured live via smartphone, with up to four cameras being used to film an event. The platform will “deliver advanced coaching insights, combining rich scouting data with integrated video to help coaches analyse and improve player performance, evaluate training sessions and enhance in-game decision making,” according to a press release.

Genius’s foray into streaming comes after other sports data providers such as Sportradar, IMG and Perform have already developed video solutions for streaming live sports to rights holders and betting operators. Leagues such as the Dutch Basketball League, French Volleyball League, Belgium’s Euro Millions Volley League, and volleyball federations in the Czech Republic and Portugal are currently using GeniusLive to power their live streams of games.
