Royals FC, Thorns Investigating Fans' Alleged Racists Comments

The NWSL Utah Royals FC and the Portland Thorns are "investigating allegations of a fan yelling racist comments" at Thorns G Adrianna Franch during Friday's match, according to Alex Vejar of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. The allegations surfaced on social media after a Twitter user claimed hearing a fan call Franch, who is black, "'the N word' and 'ugly.'" The initial tweet containing that specific allegation has "since been deleted." The Royals and Thorns each made statements on Twitter "condemning the alleged actions, saying 'racism in any form is unacceptable.'" When the incident was first reported on social media, the official Twitter account of the Royals responded, requesting that fans "point out the alleged offender so that he could be removed, and extra security appears to have been sent to the area" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 9/9). THE ATHLETIC's Megan Linehan noted the NWSL also stepped in, stating that the league had "been made aware of an incident" at Friday's match. The league statement concluded: "Per league policy, appropriate actions will be taken with the club and individual following the outcome of the investigation into this matter." At the time the league's statement was posted, there was "no league policy publicly available that could be applied to this incident." There was "no known fan code of conduct, or similar document, that applied at a league level" (THEATHLETIC.com, 9/8).
