WNBA Aces Bullish On Future Amid Decrease In Announced Attendance

Average announced attendance through 12 Aces home games is 4,459, third lowest in the leaguegetty images

The WNBA Las Vegas Aces' home attendance at Mandalay Bay Events Center is down this season, but the franchise is "optimistic about the future amid what team officials say is an increase in turnstile attendance," according to Sam Gordon of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. The Aces' average announced attendance through 12 home games is 4,459, "third lowest of the 12 WNBA teams" and a 16% "decrease from last season's average of 5,317" during the team's first year in Las Vegas. However, Aces Assistant GM Christine Monjer said that "actual attendance ... is up." The Aces "declined to disclose actual attendance numbers" for '18 or this season. Monjer said that the team "stopped distributing excess tickets" that it "knew wouldn't be used and have been more selective about promotional offers this season." The Aces are 15-8 and playing for a top-two seed in the WNBA Playoffs, but team President of Basketball Operations and coach Bill Laimbeer said that he "doesn't necessarily expect an uptick in attendance during the final stretch despite two recent promotional offers." However, Laimbeer added that he is "pleased with the atmosphere created by the typical home crowd" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/9).
