Top MLS Brass Decide Not To Punish Bedoya For Gun Comments

Bedoya's words drew support from teammates and other players across the leagueGETTY IMAGES

MLS' decision not to discipline Union MF Alejandro Bedoya for grabbing a field-level microphone at Audi Field on Sunday and imploring Congress to address gun violence came from the league's "executive level," according to Steven Goff of the WASHINGTON POST. An MLS spokesperson said that the league's disciplinary committee, which "considers potential fines and suspensions for actions ranging from embellishment to violent conduct, has yet to meet this week and will not address the Bedoya matter" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/6). In Philadelphia, Jonathan Tannenwald notes there was "ample speculation Sunday night that Bedoya would be fined for his remarks." Bedoya yesterday was "recognized as MLS’ Player of the Week." His words "drew support from around the sport," including his teammates and a "host of players around the league" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 8/6). MLSPA Exec Dir Bob Foose also "released a statement Sunday night in support" of Bedoya (PROSOCCERUSA.com, 8/5).

CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS? In Portland, Jamie Goldberg writes Bedoya’s comments "put MLS in an awkward situation." MLS enacted rules this season to "prevent fans from bringing political banners or imagery to stadiums, which has caused controversy in some markets, including Portland and Seattle" (Portland OREGONIAN, 8/6).
