College Facility Notes: Boston College Names New Center For Pete Frates

In Boston, Tara Sullivan notes the name Pete Frates will "live on forever at Boston College thanks to a dedication ceremony" held on campus yesterday. The school "honored its former baseball captain by naming Phase II of the Harrington Athletics Village the Pete Frates Center, done through the generosity of the Yawkey Foundation and additional donors." The center "will provide a 31,000-square-foot indoor baseball and softball facility with locker rooms, hitting tunnels, indoor turf field, strength and conditioning space, and a hospitality area" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/27).

DESIGN TWEAK: Utah has selected Populous to design its $80M Rice-Eccles Stadium "south end zone expansion project." The hiring of Populous comes with a "slight change to the stadium's original expansion designs." The original design mockups had a "walking platform atop the luxury suites." But that design has "changed to include seating to accommodate the increase to 51,444 seats from 45,807" (KSL.com, 6/25).

NEW ISSUE: UConn spent $10M last year "replacing the decaying triangular insulated panels that make up the ceiling at the 10,000-seat Gampel Pavilion," but officials yesterday told the school's BOT that it needs another $1.8M for "more work, including the installation of permanent dehumidifiers to deal with condensation that was discovered building up between the ceiling and the building's aluminum roof" (AP, 6/26).
