Derek Jeter Calls Parting Ways With Chip Bowers A "Tough Decision"

Jeter took responsibility for the decision to part ways with Bowers, but didn't give details about his reasoningsGETTY IMAGES

Marlins CEO Derek Jeter said the team's decision to part ways with President of Business Operations Chip Bowers was one they "didn't make lightly or spontaneously," according to Wells Dusenbury of the South Florida SUN SENTINEL. Jeter: "We have an ownership group that has a lot of high expectations and at times we move at a challenging pace. This has to do with our overall business strategy, accountability and we felt as though a change was needed in the leadership group." He added, "Everyone here in this organization has to be on the same page. Sometimes, you're going to have to make tough decisions." Jeter also indicated that the move "wasn’t related to the team’s league-worst attendance to begin the season." He said, "We’d love to see more people here, but look, like we’ve said before, we’re working hard on gaining the trust of our fan base and there are some positives" (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 5/3). Jeter "took responsibility" for the decision with Bowers but "didn't dive into details" (MIAMI HERALD, 5/4).
