Pac-12 Operating Expenses Outpacing Revenue Projections

Operating expenses were projected to total $23.5M in the '18 budget, but were then amended to $25.4MGETTY IMAGES

The Pac-12's net revenue is "expected to rise" by approximately 5% year-over-year, based on the conference’s initial budget projections for FY '18 and '19, but operating expenses are "expected to rise" 15% over that same period, according to Jon Wilner of the San Jose MERCURY NEWS. Moreover, the budget "indicates payments to the campuses would climb" by approximately 3% -- half the increase in operating expenses. Each school is "expected to receive" $31.7M from the conference in FY '19, compared to $30.8M forecasted for FY '18. The total amount "shipped to each campus could be slightly higher" than $31.7M based on allocations from the NCAA for sports sponsorships. Total revenue for conference-side operations (i.e., excluding the Pac-12 Networks) was $387.3M for FY '19. Broadcast rights from ESPN and Fox "accounted for the largest bucket" ($250M) followed by college football postseason ($105.8M). Meanwhile, conference operating expenses were projected to total $23.5M in the '18 budget, then amended to $25.4M in the updated (forecasted) projections (San Jose MERCURY NEWS, 4/26).
