Nevada Considers Allowing Sports Wagers From Out-Of-State Bettors

The Nevada State Gaming Control Board is "on the verge of allowing bettors from out of state to place sports wagers in Nevada sportsbooks -- if the federal government and other state governments will permit it," according to Richard Velotta of the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL. One change being considered in Nevada is altering an "existing regulation that prohibits race and sportsbooks from taking wagers from out of state." That is, unless such wagers are "legal in the jurisdiction from which they originate and federal law allows such wagers." Representatives from MGM Resorts Int'l, Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts "asked regulators to draft rules allowing players to register for gaming accounts without being physically present at the casino," which is allowed under New Jersey's new sports betting rules. Industry leaders in New Jersey said that revenue generated in September by sports betting "remotely surpassed bets placed in casinos." The NSGCB's proposed amendments also would "clarify other types of bets sportsbooks are allowed to take." Regulations would enable the NSGCB Chair to "authorize wagering on events after an applicant provides a full description of the event, how it would be supervised and whether integrity measures are in place" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 10/17).

PLACE YOUR BETS: New Mexico yesterday became the latest state to officially allow sports betting, and in Santa Fe, James Barron notes the move came "thanks to Santa Ana Star Casino & Hotel and USBookmaking partnering" to open the state's first legal sportsbook. The first bets were placed "shortly after" the sportsbook opened at 12:00pm MT, and there was a line of "about 10 people" (SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN, 10/17).
