NFL Names In The News: Cowboys' Jerry Jones Still Has The Reins

Jerry Jones' team is moving forward with his son Stephen having a stronger voice in football operationsGETTY IMAGES

In Dallas, David Moore reports Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones "remains active while laying the groundwork" for the future of the team. His son, Cowboys COO, Exec VP & Dir of Player Personnel Stephen Jones said, "I haven't seen any letup. He's the boss, and he has strong feelings about our direction and what we should be doing. I know some people say he seems to be more open-minded, but I've always felt he was open-minded. I don't think overnight things have changed. We have always been able to have a good discussion, lock arms and move forward." Nevertheless, the franchise "moves forward" with Stephen having a "stronger voice in the football operations than ever before" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 9/6).

WONDER WOMAN: In Jacksonville, Matt Soergel in a front-page piece profiles Jaguars Dir of Branded Entertainment Christy Stechman Zynda, who "oversees many of the things that go on before and during Jaguars games that don't involve actual football." Zynda oversees the "cheerleaders, furry mascot Jaxson DeVille, the D-Line drummers, and the JaxPack, that active crew that runs around with flags and shoots those free T-shirts into the stands." Zynda, who walks the sidelines during games, said, "You want people to think that it's effortless and easy and just happens. That's the goal" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 9/6).

NAMES: Former NFLer Irv Cross has been "diagnosed with mild cognitive dementia." Cross "thinks he knows" what caused it, which is why he "carries a card in his wallet instructing that after his death he wants Boston University to test his brain" for CTE. Cross said, "That's affected a lot of players from my generation. We didn't think about things like safety." Cross was also formerly an analyst on CBS' "The NFL Today" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 9/4).....Univision Chair Haim Saban and Elliott Management Founder & President Paul Singer "convened a private dinner" Tuesday in N.Y., which Patriots Owner Robert Kraft attended (POLITICO.com, 9/5)....Peyton Manning and former LSU football coach Les Miles were chosen for the Louisiana Sports HOF class of '19 (NOLA.com, 9/5).
