Phoenix Rising, Looking Toward An MLS Future, Unveils Venue Plans

Second-year USL club Phoenix Rising FC is releasing the first renderings of the stadium it would build if it is awarded an MLS franchise when the league goes through its next round of expansion. The proposed $250M venue would be on a 15.8-acre site in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community bordering Tempe and Scottsdale. Populous and Phoenix-based Gould Evans collaborated on the design. Populous has designed seven MLS stadiums, including Audi Field, which is scheduled to open in DC this season. Goldman Sachs is handling the club’s MLS bid process and the RFP for a general contractor. The team averaged nearly 100% capacity last season at its 6,200-seat Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex, a privately funded temporary stadium erected by the club on the site of the proposed venue.

OPERATION DESERT SHIELD: The Arizona desert’s climate influenced every phase of the design process, according to Populous. The asymmetrical design places the majority of 21,000 seats on the west side and provides shade for the majority of fans. Stadium entrances also are strategically shaped to maximize airflow. The entrances also feature water walls to cool patrons as they enter. Similar to other new soccer-specific venues, breathable canopies will cover the stadium bowl, concourse and area surrounding the exterior to maximize player and fan comfort while keeping the fan noise within the venue.
