Sodexo's Centerplate Continues To Lose Major Stadium Accounts

Centerplate five years ago ran the general concessions at 16 major league stadiums, but that is down to six after being ousted from Levi's Stadium this week. Centerplate also has deals with three major league-level arenas. The company has lost accounts at AT&T Park and Tropicana Field in recent months. Levy replaced Centerplate at all three of those venues. Over the past five years, Levy also assumed Centerplate’s role at Providence Park, FedEx Field and the premium catering at Nissan Stadium. Additionally, Levy will operate food and beverage operations at Audi Field, the $300M soccer stadium opening this spring for DC United. Centerplate had held that role at RFK Stadium, the club’s former home. When the Vikings moved to U.S. Bank Stadium in '16, they opted for Aramark over Centerplate, which had been the team's partner at the Metrodome since '82. The defections have trickled down to the minor leagues in recent weeks. Spectra replaced Centerplate yesterday at the Crown Complex in Fayetteville, N.C. (home to the SPHL Fayetteville Marksman since '02, as well as the Cape Fear Heroes, an indoor football team). Centerplate had been in the venue for the past 20 years. Centerplate filed a lawsuit last month against the county, county commissioners, the county’s Civic Center Commission and Spectra Venue Management claiming that Spectra, the venue’s operator, won the bid by using inside information in its RFP submission. Spectra also took over similar operations in January at The Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa. That building is home to the USHL Sioux City Musketeers and the Sioux City Bandits of Champions Indoor Football. In November, Paris-based Sodexo acquired Centerplate for $675M from Olympus Partners, the private equity firm that had owned the firm since '12.
