Sources: Underutilized Josh Elliott In Talks To Leave NBC For Old Post On ABC's "GMA"

Nearly 18 months after leaving ABC, NBC Sports' Josh Elliott is "in talks to return to his old job as the news reader on 'Good Morning America,'" according to Ramin Setoodeh of VARIETY. Sources said that ABC execs are "potentially open to a plan" to buy Elliott out of his $4M annual contract at NBC. If the deal is reached, it is "not clear how soon Elliott would return." Another source said that NBC "has an incentive to cut Elliott loose, because he's an expensive talent who hasn't been producing much early into his four-year contract." Elliott's publicist, Matt Hiltzik, said, "Josh is under contract with NBC Sports, and the claim that either he or his agents have had any negotiations with NBC about leaving or with ABC about returning is categorically false." At NBC, Elliot had "tethered his career" to former "Today" Senior VP & GM Jamie Horowitz, who was fired from the post late last year. Elliott had "gone to NBC with the impression that he’d be the heir to either 'Today’s' Matt Lauer or Bob Costas at NBC Sports." Lauer "signed a new contract" in '14, and Costas "seems entrenched" (VARIETY.com, 7/29). In N.Y., Emily Smith notes Elliott, a one-time ESPN anchor, left “GMA” saying the decision to leave was a “deeply personal” move. He has "anchored horse racing and football, but had been expected to play a larger role on 'Today'" (N.Y. POST, 7/30).
