Chargers' Spanos Agrees To Meet With San Diego Mayor For Stadium Discussion

Chargers Special Counsel to the President Mark Fabiani yesterday said that team President Dean Spanos "will accept" San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s request to "meet one-on-one to discuss how the mayor can help keep the Chargers in San Diego," according to a front-page piece by David Garrick of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Meanwhile, the mayor's task force for a new Chargers stadium "will host a public forum" on March 2 at Qualcomm Stadium. Faulconer requested a private meeting with Spanos on Tuesday after "characterizing recent criticism of the task force by Fabiani as 'divisive' and something that could 'undermine' the work of the volunteer panel of civic leaders." While no date has been set, Faulconer "hopes the meeting can happen quickly." Fabiani said that his criticisms this week "weren’t meant to undermine the work of the task force, but to improve the process so the panel will have a better chance of success" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/19). In L.A., Tony Perry writes one concern that the San Diego task force will "doubtless hear is steadfast opposition from a segment of the voting public to any funds being used to build an NFL stadium." State law "requires a two-thirds approval of voters to raise taxes" (L.A. TIMES, 2/19). In San Diego, Roger Showley asks, "Is there an economic argument in favor of building a new Chargers stadium?" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 2/19). Meanwhile, the UNION-TRIBUNE published several letters and e-mails from readers, with many critical of Fabiani and the Chargers.
