People & Personalities: YES Meets Yes: Wilkins Home Again

Yes! Man: Albert To Call Nets
Games For YES Network

The Nets will “soon announce that Marv Albert will be the new voice of the team on YES,” according to Andrew Marchand of the N.Y. POST. Albert will call about 50 games next year, while longtime play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle–-would do the remainder if he agrees to stay. Although the length of Albert’s deal is not known, “it would figure to extend through the Nets’ move to Brooklyn, which they hope to make in 2007.” Sources said that Albert, who currently calls NBA game on TNT, made $2M for 50-60 games when he worked for the Knicks (N.Y. POST, 2/8).

HOMEWARD BOUND: Also in N.Y., Marc Berman reported former Knicks coach and Seattle resident Lenny Wilkens has “nixed the Knicks’ assistant GM position” and taken a job at FSN Northwest to do pregame and postgame shows for the Sonics. Wilkins coached the Sonics in two different stints, including their championship year in ’78. He also played for the team (N.Y. POST, 2/5).

SOUTHBOUND: In Chicago, Tim Cronin reports Dave Wills, who hosted White Sox radio broadcasts on WMVP-AM for the last decade, and Andy Freed have been hired by the D’Rays to replace Charlie Slowes and Paul Olden, the club’s radio announcers since the team’s inception in ’98. Freed was previously with the Triple-A Int’l League Pawtucket Red Sox. Cronin notes as is the case with many MLB teams, there “will be no analyst in the booth” (DAILY SOUTHTOWN, 2/5).
