LEAGUE NOTES

          In an extensive report, the INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS
     profiled the CART and IRL series three years removed from
     their split, and Miller & Koenig wrote, "It's hard to
     estimate how much damage this civil war has done to open-
     wheel racing in the United States" (STAR-NEWS, 11/22). ...In
     Edmonton, reps from the six Canadian NHL teams met in
     Montreal to "iron out details" of the proposed '99 preseason
     tournament.  A "stumbling block" is how many games would be
     televised and how those profits would be split (EDMONTON
     SUN, 11/22)....Coyotes C Keith Tkachuk, on participating in
     the 2002 Winter Olympics: "I want to go back to Salt Lake so
     we [the U.S.] can redeem ourselves, because we're a much
     better hockey team" (AZ REPUBLIC, 11/21)....The Winnipeg
     Blue Bombers broke even in hosting the Grey Cup, as the
     planning, promoting and staging of the game cost organizers
     C$3.7M.  The team "hoped to earn" C$1M (CP/Mult. 11/24).
