DOES INDY HAVE THE CORPORATE/BUSINESS BASE TO BACK COLTS?

Corporate support of the Colts in Indianapolis was
examined by Sean Horgan of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS.
While the corporate community "is one of the essential
elements in the only plan that can keep the Colts" in Indy,
Horgan wondered "whether the corporate community is wealthy
enough to uphold a huge financial commitment over the long
haul." Local companies are being asked to back the Colts at
the same time they are being asked to make "substantial
financial commitments to premium seating in the Pacers new
arena." Emmis Broadcasting Chair & CEO and former Mariners
Owner Jeff Smulyan: "This is probably the most committed
corporate community you will find in America on a per-capita
basis." But Horgan noted that IN "boasts corporate
headquarters for six Fortune 500 companies -- five in the
Indianapolis area." In comparison, New York City has 46,
Chicago has 15, Atlanta and Philadelphia each have 10, while
Dallas, Pittsburgh and St. Louis have nine Fortune 500
     companies (INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS, 10/25).
