ARIZONA COUNTY SUPERVISOR SHOT, APPARENTLY OVER STADIUM TAX

In Arizona, Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox
was shot on Wednesday, reportedly due to her support of the
Bank One Ballpark stadium tax, according to Herman, Steckner
& McCloy of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Wilcox was shot in the
left pelvis and is in stable condition. Larry Naman, "who
confessed" to shooting Wilcox, said he was trying to stop
"the political dictatorship of [D'Backs Managing General
Partner] Jerry Colangelo ... in pushing the baseball stadium
tax." In a statement from jail, Naman "referred to Wilcox's
support of the Bank One Ballpark and a sales tax she helped
pass to finance construction." He added that he "hoped to
force the destruction of Bank One Ballpark." Colangelo, who
was out of town, released a statement: "Everyone associated
with our organization is appalled by the violent act against
this public servant" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 8/14).
