ONE MORE YEAR AND NCAA ATHLETES CAN GO OUT ON THE JOB MARKET

The NCAA Div. I Board of Dir have delayed the
implementation of Proposition 62, which would allow student-
athletes to work and earn money during the school year. It
will now go into effect August 1, 1998. The delay was "to
permit further evaluation and development of guidelines and
processes to initiate, review and monitor student-athlete
employment" (NCAA). Big 12 Commissioner Steve Hatchell:
"There is a strong sentiment to provide windows of
opportunity for the student-athletes. It's been left open to
just enormous interpretations. How much can you work? What
kind of jobs? How do you verify the jobs? And those are
just a few of the questions" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/14).
