SPORTS AUTHORITY REPORTS RECORD EARNINGS FOR FIRST QUARTER

          The Sports Authority Inc. announced record first
     quarter net income, earnings per share, and sales for the
     period ending April 27, 1997.  The company earned net income
     of $2.6M, or $.08/share, compared to net income of $2.1M of
     $.07/share a year ago.  Sales for the period were $319.8M,
     an 18.2% increase from $270.6M for the same period last
     year.  TSA Chair & CEO Jack Smith also announced that the
     company has hired The Lord Group, a joint venture of Young &
     Rubicam, Inc. and Dentsu, as its new ad agency and marketing
     communications partner (The Sports Authority).  CNBC's Ted
     David reported that at $.08/share, the first quarter
     earnings for TSA were "just a penny short of expectations"
     ("Market Wrap," CNBC, 5/13).
