LETTERMAN TO KING GEORGE: NO MOVE OR ENCOUNTER WRATH OF DAVE

     Yankees Owner GEORGE STEINBRENNER was the lead guest on
"Late Show" with DAVID LETTERMAN last night.  Letterman to
Steinbrenner, noting Manager JOE TORRE had been soaked with
champagne by Yankee players the night before: "We wanted to soak
you with champagne as well.  And so we started calling Yankees,
'Won't this be fun, come and spray George.'  Nobody would come."
More Letterman: "Let me just tell you something here, and please
don't be offended.  If you move out of Yankee Stadium, if I get a
sense that you're going to move out of Yankee Stadium, I'll hunt
you down and beat you to death with my fists"  ("Late Show," CBS,
10/29).
