HANDS OFF! NBA INVESTIGATES RAPTORS' PURSUIT OF VAN HORN

The NBA security department has begun an investigation into
charges made by Univ. of Utah coach Rick Majerus that the Raptors
contacted Keith Van Horn before the May 19 draft lottery and
advised him to turn pro. Raptors VP Isiah Thomas "strongly
denied any wrongdoing," according to Chris Young in Toronto. The
team could face a "stiff" fine and perhaps the loss of draft
choices if the league finds they violated league bylaws. Majerus
said Raptors broadcaster Leo Rautins approached a former national
teammate, David Turcotte, a lawyer based in Salk Lake City, about
talking with Van Horn. Majerus said Rautins was acting on
Thomas' instructions and that the Raptors told the Utes junior
they would take him at No. 2. The STAR's Young calls such
infractions "rare" (TORONTO STAR, 5/30).
