STUDY TO BE DONE ON POSSIBLE STADIUM SITES FOR YANKEES

New York City and state officials met yesterday with Yankees
Owner George Steinbrenner and agreed to "carry out studies of
three possible stadium sites for a new stadium," according to
Vivian Toy of the N.Y. TIMES. The sites include two in the Bronx
and one in Manhattan. Officials did not rule out keeping the
team at their present site. Steinbrenner also agreed to pay 1/3
of expenses for the studies, estimated to cost as much as
$600,000. Toy writes the "willingness to spend $200,000 is an
indication that the Yankees want to stay" in New York (N.Y.
TIMES, 10/19). The N.Y. POST reports the three sites are Van
Cortlandt Park and Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx and the 34th St.
rail yards, south of Javits Center, on the West Side. One source
told the POST "interest is centered" on Manhattan (Christopher
Policano, N.Y. POST, 10/19). In NEWSDAY, Steve Zipay examines
how stadiums affect franchise values. FINANCIAL WORLD Editor
Douglas McIntyre claims that if Steinbrenner "ever got his dream
stadium, his team would be worth more than the Cowboys" (NEWSDAY,
10/19).
